Navigating Windows Server Versions and Optimizing Your Sage 100 Experience

Stay ahead of the curve by keeping your Windows server software and Sage 100 solution in lockstep with the latest supported versions.

Your business depends on the reliability and security that updated technology provides.

What Is Windows Server?

Originally launched as Windows NT Server, and rebranded to Windows Server in 2003, this family of operating systems by Microsoft is a linchpin for network services—enabling file sharing, web hosting, and secure remote access with finesse. Designed to offer a centralized, secure platform for data and application management across your organization, Windows Server stands as the world's leading server OS, trusted by millions to power websites and applications.

How to Identify Your Current Windows Server Version

Knowing the exact version of your Windows Server is crucial for maintaining compatibility with critical applications like Sage 100. Here’s a quick and easy guide to check your server’s heartbeat (all these steps are done at the server):

  • Run Command: Simply press `Win + R`, type `winver` into the command box, and press Enter. A dialog box will pop up, revealing your Windows Server version.

  • Start Menu: Open the Start menu and type “system information” into the search box. Once the System Information window opens, look for the “OS Name” entry and check what is written next to it.

  • Control Panel: Open the Control Panel and selecting the System Settings option. The version of the Windows Server will be listed under the System type field.

Why Windows Server Is Important to Sage 100 Users

For Sage 100 users, staying up-to-date regarding Windows Server versions is crucial. Microsoft ends support for older versions regularly, as seen with Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2. It's essential for the smooth operation and security of both your Windows and Sage 100 systems to use Windows Server versions that are compatible with Sage 100 as well as supported Sage 100 releases. Keeping your systems aligned ensures optimal performance and safeguards your business processes.
